Around the end of each year and the beginning of the next, most of us start thinking about what we’d like to change about ourselves. Whether it’s getting more exercise, eating better, or just healthier habits in general, most of us have things that we’d love to be different about us.

Which raises the question, how do human beings actually change? If we all want to be different, how do we get there, exactly? What does it look like to begin as one type of person and then become another? The Scriptures have a lot to say about how we change. They teach that change comes from and through a number of different places. But one unavoidable source of change is our habits. The things we do over and over again have an uncanny ability to shape who we are.

In this recurring series we take an extended look at the art and science of how we change, highlighting one practice or habit each year. This installment of our Formation series focuses specifically on prayer’s ability to change and shape us and human beings.

Listen to Teaching

Teachings from the series will be posted below as they occur, beginning with the most recent.

Pray With Us

To accompany the series, our teaching team has assembled a five-week practice guide complete with prayer prompts for every day of the week. You can access the practice guide in three different formats.

  1. Download the prayer guide in PDF format here (or pick up a hard copy at one of our Gatherings).

  2. Sign up for text alerts to receive the prayer prompts in SMS format. Just text the word MORNING, AFTERNOON or EVENING to 91011 (pick the word corresponding to the time of day you want to receive the text—texts go out at 6:00am, 3:00pm, and 8:00pm respectively).

  3. Follow us on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram where we’ll post the prayer prompts each day during the series.
